BLOG CHALLENGE || Week 2: 5 Must Haves

Blog Challenge W2

Welcome back for Week 2 of my BLM Blog Challenge! I hope you enjoyed Week 1 and were able to update your layout if you were thinking about a new one or haven’t updated it in a while. This week we’re adding and updating 5 things each blog NEEDS!

Task : Make sure your blog has the most used and popular functions readers rely on when visiting a blog. The goal is to make it easy for visitors to view and navigate your blog so that they enjoy their time there and continue to visit (and hopefully subscribe).

A few essential elements of any [successful] blog are:

Organized Sidebar | The sidebar should include your networks, social media buttons, top posts and anything else you want readers to see as soon as they visit your blog. Your sidebar is a quick snapshot of the things that make you cool – your blog affiliations and networks. These should all be the same size and centered, if possible.

Beautiful Header | “Beautiful” is relative. What’s gorgeous to me may not be to someone else and vice versa. However, your header should be vibrant, crisp and include your tagline for sure.

Top Posts List | Flaunt your most read posts. If you have several very popular posts chances are new readers will like them, too.

Categories and Tabs | Organization makes your blog so much neater but also encourages readers to stay longer because it’s easy for them to find content that interests them which decreases your bounce rate.

Search Button | This function is important because it allows readers to search for very specific topics and posts when they visit.

Another key feature is a subscribe button or sign-up option to encourage readers to receive automatic blog updates on your new posts. Some blogs have a pop-up prompt for first-time visitors when you visit. Other bloggers offer a free download in exchange for joining their email list. Get creative but make your visitors repeat visitors.

Have a question, post it below? Once you’ve updated your 5 must-haves, add a link to your blog below so I can check it out! It’s not too late to join this FREE Blog Challenge. Sign up here.

Excellent list. One more tip – if you run features (daily, weekly or monthly) consider making a little pretty graphic for it (using a free tool like Canva) and place it in your sidebar widgets or just use text to highlight your features so folks can go straight there.

Ok one more LOL – cutomizing can be overwhleming, but an easy way to keep track of all the pretty bells and whistles you want to add to your blog is to keep a private Pinterest baord of all the blogs you love and write notes in the comment area about which specific element you like; as you add these liked features to your own blog delete them from your Pinterest board. Customizing your virtual space is process. HAVE FUN!

Still have a couple of things to add and modify. I must say this is def helping for web projects that I have coming up. Slightly diff than what I’m used to, but it’s making more sense.
