Ever since college I’ve been tempted to move south and chuck up the deuces to New York. But, every time I try to work up the nerve I’m reminded why I can’t: NYC has e-very-thang including bomb eateries. Veggie Castle II is my newest and most beloved discovery.
I decided to experiment this past summer and become a vegetarian. When I became a pescetarian in college it wasn’t as easy to find healthy meat-free options in restaurants and ultimately I went back to eating meat. A lot has changed since then. A few weeks ago I visited the Veggie Castle II in Queens, NYC and this week I took my second trip there. I can’t wait to go back.
Veggie Castle II is located at 132-9 Liberty Ave, Jamaica, NY. I had never heard of Veggie Castle II but apparently there used to be a Veggie Castle I somewhere in Brooklyn (it’s since closed). My boyfriend found it on Instagram, checked out some reviews and suggested that we try it out. He said he thought I’d like it and he was right! (Thanks, BAE.)
The first thing that got my attention was the line inside, I was starving so I almost didn’t go in. But, y’all KNOW us black folks always say “if it’s crowded that means the food is good!” LOL. Even though the line was long, the wait wasn’t. The staff was very nice and answered all of my questions about each dish. I even decided on a juice – I got #10. It was really good!
My first trip there I got jerk tofu, yellow rice and steamed veggies. And, it was SO GOOD. My boyfriend got some kind of pepper “steak” … I think it was soy? I really don’t know…but he said it was good. The only thing I didn’t like was that my food wasn’t HOT. I’m a slow eater so by the time I was just about done it was cold.
When I went back this week I ordered jerk “chicken,” yellow rice mixed with veggies and asparagus. Oh. Em. Gee. It was even better than last time. As we were leaving I saw them putting out fresh patties. I’ve always been a sucker for a veggie patty. Delicious. Not too salty and it had a spicy kick. The food was also hotter this time.
I LOVE that they serve fresh juice and wheat grass shots! Whaaaat? I also saw on the menu that they serve breakfast. And an Instagram friend said they have porridge. SHUT THE FRONT DOOR. I often think I’m Caribbean so I love porridge and I’ll definitely be back for that. If you’re in NY, I highly recommend Veggie Castle II. I can’t wait to go back.
