Last Monday I had the pleasure of attending the pre-screening of Beyond the Lights in NYC. LaLa Anthony and Nicole Bitchie kicked off the pre-screening by telling the audience the story behind the story and why the movie is important to them and for us. It made the movie even more special to hear from them first-hand how hard Gina Prince Bythewood, the Writer and Director, worked to get Beyond the Lights in theaters.
Beyond the Lights is a love story for us by us – it’s absolutely beautiful to watch the love story between Noni and Kas unfold. It speaks to our generation on so many levels. But, it doesn’t only focus on traditional love between a man and a woman. The movie takes us on Noni’s journey to self-love, finding confidence off the stage and what it means to find and own your voice.
I personally learned so much from the movie but the scene that hit home the most for me was at the beginning of the movie. Noni and her mom are in Noni’s school parking lot. Noni just “won” her school talent show and her mother tells her to throw away her trophy. Noni is confused and asks her mother why. Her mother asks Noni if she wants to be a runner-up or a winner. That scene set the tone for the movie and Noni’s life overall.
This movie is a must-see. If you haven’t already, PLEASE go out and support this film. If you have seen the movie, please share below what your favorite scene is.
