Last Thursday I attended Curls on Fleek presented by Obia Natural Haircare featuring pRoy at Piquant in Brooklyn, NYC. It was SUCH an amazing event. Some of the information Obia shared with us about natural hair and how to treat it for optimal hair health myself and many of the other guests had never heard before.
I’ve been a longtime fan of Obia and her products! Check out my twist out – I used the Obia Twist Whip Butter for this definition. I’ve been to lots of events in many different states (my own included but I’ve never had information broken down and explained the way Obia did. But, what made it even more phenomenal was that Obia not only explained the complexities of our hair and how to care for it but WHY. Plus her medical background makes her a credible source. Not to mention her personal allergies make her more conscious and aware when creating products for us, her customers.
Obia’s discussion focused predominantly on pH balance and why it’s important. She started off by explaining the difference between an acid and a base and the effect both have on the hair then quizzing the audience on many commonly used “kitchen ingredients”. She then debunked the myth that there’s a correlation between hair type and products.
Obia explained that the normal pH balance of our hair is usually between 4.5 and 5.5 so it’s important that your hair be returned to this number (or whatever your personal pH balance is) after your wash day is complete. Obia explained that the products we use raise and lower our pH level. Liquid shampoo can bring your hair to a pH of 8 or 9 which is much higher than a soap bar. For this reason, Obia only carries shampoo bars. Her Coconut Shea Shampoo bar is my favorite! She taught us how to raise and lower our pH balance and to take cues from our hair instead of trying to keep up with the newest products and trends.
Definitely check out Obia Natural Haircare Products if you are looking for a line with integrity, good ingredients and an owner who is interested in US. Shout out to Bella Kinks, Curls and Couture and pRoy. Love me some natural hair boos!
